James served in the Vietnam War from December 25, 1966 to December 23, 1967. He was in service for his country from March 1966 to January 1970. He was honorably discharged from the Air Force as Air Man 1st Cl. and was awarded the Air Force Medal for Small Arms Expert and Air Force Presidential Unit Citation.
